Injury Update: Andrew Mukuba To Have Surgery On Fractured Ankle

The loss to Dallas was the insult and it adds to the Eagles injuries.

While the full details of Lane Johnson’s injury have still not been officially released to know how long he’ll be out, the Eagles also saw a bunch of injuries as they were floundering in Dallas.

Moro Ojomo suffered a wrist injury, Reed Blankenship left and didn’t return, Adoree’ Jackson seemed to suffer a concusion, and Andrew Mukuba went down hard on a play that really was meaningless at the time – perhaps it even would have been better for him to have not made that tackle and just allowed the Cowboys to score a touchdown and give the offense a chance.

Well, not making that tackle would have been better for his health as Mukuba will now need surgery on a fractured ankle.

The reports are that it isn’t considered a “long-term” injury that would hamper him into next season, but it won’t be known if he has a chance to play again this year or not until the surgery occurs.

Mukuba was shaken up on that last crosser at the end of the game and did not get up, immediately rolling in pain.

Michael Carter collided with Quinyon Mitchell on the play, leaving the crossing route wide-open where Mukuba hit the receiver and Sydney Brown hit both of them, apparently fracturing the second-round pick’s ankle in the process.

No update has been given on Reed Blankenship, but the team may be without he and Mukuba on Friday against the Bears. Mukuba has really started to grow into a solid player over the past few weeks and limited the blatant mistakes he had been making early on.

Now, the Eagles roster has only Sydney Brown at safety healthy, a safety in his fourth year who continues to take dumb penalties and makes the same mistakes a rookie would make. Andre’ Sam is the only safety on the practice squad.

Veteran Marcus Epps remains on IR, meaning the only other backup in-house for the Eagles would be moving Cooper DeJean to safety (which may be tough with Adoree’ Jackson’s head injury potentially sidelining him), veteran Tariq Castro-Fields, who has mostly played corner in college and the pros, but is listed as a general DB by the Eagles, and undrafted free agent Brandon Johnson, also listed as a DB.

At this point it would really be a shock if the Eagles did not reach out to free agent safeties. Justin Simmons is a former All-Pro in Fangio’s defense so might be a natural fit if the money works. Lewis Cine, if healthy again, spent the offseason with the Eagles and would be familiar with the defense.

Other free agent options could include Tashaun Gipson, Vonn Bell, Adrian Amos, Quandre Diggs, Mike Edwards (currently on Chiefs PS), Maxen Hook (spent offseason with Eagles, on Seahawks PS), Jalen Mills (Texans PS), and K’Von Wallace (Texans PS).
