It’s looking increasingly like the Philadelphia Eagles will once again lose a coordinator to a head coaching job while preparing for a Super Bowl.

Philadelphia famously – or infamously in the case of former defensive coordinator Jonathan Gannon – lost both coordinators while preparing to face the Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl LVII. OC Shane Steichen became the head coach in Indianapolis while Gannon took over the Arizona Cardinals. The Arizona-Gannon situation was fraught with tampering and possibly affected the defensive game plan in the Super Bowl.

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Birds’ offensive coordinator Kellen Moore is “viewed” as the favorite to take over as the New Orleans Saints head coach. The news comes after Washington Commanders offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury and former Dallas Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy withdrew their names from consideration. Kingsbury is choosing to stay another year with up-and-coming quarterback Jayden Daniels while McCarthy is reportedly taking a year off from football.

New Orleans ownership and Moore met for a second time on Monday in Philadelphia. The most recent meeting marked the first in-person interview between Moore and the Saints, Moore’s previous interview during the NFL divisional round was done virtually. The 36-year-old also interviewed with Jacksonville and Dallas.

As of now, the New Orleans job is the last remaining NFL head coaching vacancy barring a surprise firing and/or retirement.

Due to NFL rules, Moore’s potential hiring by New Orleans won’t be announced until after Super Bowl LIX.
