Palmerias Takes Down Botafogo In Extra Time, Advances To Quarterfinals

Philadelphia: We have arrived at the exciitng time of the FIFA Club World Cup – the knockout round. It got going on Saturday afternoon from Lincoln Financial Field in South Philadelphia as Palmeiras battled with Botafogo.

A crowd of 33,657 would watch a backyard brawl between the two teams from Brazil. The President of FIFA Gianni Infantino was one of those in attendance for this game.

How they made the round:

Palmeiras made their way to Philadelphia for the Round of 16 by winning group A. In their last game, Palmeiras recorded a draw against Inter Miami. Botafogo made their way to South Philly by coming in 2nd place in group B. In their last game, Botafogo lost to Atlético Madrid.

How the game went:
Early on in the 1st half, both teams would have their chances to score. Both fans were into it from the start.

Palmeiras would have 2 golden scoring opportunities in the first 10 minutes of the match and this was one of their better ones:

Botafogo had a couple of chances to take the lead, but were unable to capitalize on them.

The game would be scoreless at halftime.

Going into the second half, what could Palmeiras and Botafogo do to get the scoring started and who would advance to the next round?

Early in the second half, Palmeiras would have the 2nd best scoring chance of the game, but missed the net by inches again.

Palmeiras then thought they would get the scoring started in the 49th minute, but it was ruled offside.

Later on in the second half, who could break through? The answer to that would be no one as this game would head to extra time to see who moves on in the knockout round.

During extra time, we would finally see a goal scored – from Palmeiras and it was from Paulinho’s leg.

After the first period of extra time, Palmeiras would take the 1-0 lead.

Could Botafogo get the game even during the second part of extra time?

In the second part of extra time, Botafogo had a couple of scoring chances but were unable to finish.

A red card was shown to Palmeiras’ Gustavo Gomez for his 2nd yellow of the game. He will miss the next match.

The final whistle was blown, and Palmeiras won and is moving on to the quarterfinals. After the game, they celebrated with their fans:
