Philadelphia Flyers and Philadelphia 76ers Announce Plans for New Arena at the South Philadelphia Sports Complex

Just 24-hours after news broke of the Philadelphia 76ers plans to scrap their 76 Place at Market East proposal, the team along with the Philadelphia Flyers announced plans for a new arena at the South Philadelphia Sports Complex.
A joint venture between Comcast-Spectacor and Harris-Blitzer Sports & Entertainment, the new building is set to open in time for the 2031-2032 winter sports seasons. The state-of-the-art building will replace the aging Wells Fargo Center which opened in 1996 and was recently renovated. In addition, Comcast will purchase a minority stake in the 76ers and work with HBSE to bring a WNBA team to Philadelphia. There’s more to the Flyers and Sixers plans than just an arena and a Philadelphia WNBA team including revitalization of the Market East corridor where 76 Place was to be located.
Here’s what we know so far:
- The project is a 50-50 joint venture between Comcast & HBSE
- Comcast will buy a minority stake in Philadelphia 76ers
- Comcast & HBSE will work with the NBA to bring a WNBA team to Philadelphia
- Comcast & HBSE will have equal representation on the board with a HBSE representative serving as the chairperson
- The joint venture will focus on redeveloping the Market East section as part of the larger plan

“We’re thrilled to see Comcast Spectacor and HBSE unite to deliver a new state-of-the-art arena in South Philadelphia. For the past 58 years, in both the Spectrum and Wells Fargo Center, those arenas and Flyers’ fans have consistently produced an atmosphere that is among the best in sports. This visionary and forward-looking facility will take the fan experience to a whole new level where the great pride and passion of Philadelphia sports fans will continue to be on full display.”
