DENVER, COLORADO - FEBRUARY 02: Samuel Ersson #33 of the Philadelphia Flyers makes a save against Martin Necas #88 of the Colorado Avalanche in the second period at Ball Arena on February 02, 2025 in Denver, Colorado.

Sunday’s game was more of the same from the Flyers in recent memory. After a 5-0 loss on Wednesday in New Jersey and a 3-0 loss to the Islanders on Thursday, they set a franchise record on Sunday.

For the first time in franchise history, the Flyers have been shut out in three straight games. The Colorado Avalanche scored twice in the second period to provide the difference in a 2-0 loss for the Flyers.

The Flyers opened up a 9-0 lead in shots to start the game, with the only chance for the Avalanche coming on a shot from Martin Necas that hit the post. Through 20 minutes, shots were 10-6 Flyers.

The Avalanche finally broke the ice at 8:33 of the second. After Scott Laughton missed the net on an odd-man rush, the Avalanche moved in transition and Casey Mittelstadt set up the trailer Samuel Girard for his third goal of the season to make it 1-0.

The game’s first power play came with under five minutes to play, and the Avalanche cashed in on that too. Nathan MacKinnon fired a shot from the left circle that beat Sam Ersson for his 20th goal of the season to make it 2-0.

Through two periods, shots were 24-17.

In the third, the Avalanche locked things down. While the Flyers limited chances as well, they were unable to score for the third straight game, extending their goalless drought to 180:15. Their last goal came into an empty net at the end of last Monday’s game. Their last goal into a tended net was at 2:49 of the second period on Monday, a drought of 217:11.

Mackenzie Blackwood finished with 24 saves in the shutout. Ersson was also solid, making 30 saves on 32 shots.

Jonathan Drouin finished with two assists for Colorado. Rasmus Ristolainen left the game after the second period and did not return.

The Flyers are back on the ice on Tuesday night as they take on the Utah Hockey Club at 9 p.m.
