The follow-up to a statement win for the Philadelphia Flyers was a disappointing performance against the New York Islanders, all with third place in the Metropolitan Division on the line.

Instead of a carryover effect from the road trip, the Flyers were outplayed in a 4-0 loss to the Islanders on Monday night.

The Islanders scored the lone goal of the first period while shorthanded. Sam Ersson played the puck to the corner off a high lob into the zone. Casey Cizikas won the race to the loose puck and centered to Jean-Gabriel Pageau for his ninth goal to make it 1-0.

Through 20 minutes, shots were 7-7.

The Islanders extended the lead with two goals in the second. At 5:41, a point shot by Isaiah George was deflected by Mathew Barzal for his 12th goal of the season. Then at 12:50, Tony DeAngelo scored on the power play to make it a 3-0 game.

Shots were 15-14 Flyers after two periods.

Pageau scored the only goal of the third period at 13:38 to cap the scoring.

Ilya Sorokin took care of all 21 shots faced in the shutout win. Ersson made 19 saves on 23 shots in the loss.

In addition to Pageau’s two-goal game, Barzal and Anthony Duclair each had two points.

The Flyers are back in action on Wednesday night against the Columbus Blue Jackets at 7:30 p.m.
