Jan 23, 2025; New York, New York, USA; New York Rangers defenseman Braden Schneider (4) (not pictured) scores a goal past Philadelphia Flyers goaltender Samuel Ersson (33) during the first period at Madison Square Garden.

Both the Flyers and New York Rangers entered Thursday’s game on points streaks. Something was going to have to give for one side. Unfortunately for the Flyers, the Rangers’ Vezina-winning goalie was on point once again.

An early goal for the Flyers was all they could manage as the Rangers eventually took control of the game in a 6-1 loss on Thursday night at Madison Square Garden.

The Flyers got on the board right away at 1:25. A 3-on-1 resulted in a centering pass from Travis Konecny that deflected off the skate of Owen Tippett and in for his 14th of the season to make it 1-0.

The Rangers pulled even at the nine-minute mark of the period. Braden Schneider‘s centering pass deflected off the stick of Egor Zamula and in to make it 1-1 on his third of the season. Just 1:24 later, the Rangers had the lead again on another deflected. Ryan Lindgren‘s point shot was deflected by Adam Edstrom to make it 2-1 at 10:24.

Through 20 minutes, shots were 15-11 Rangers.

The Rangers added to the lead at 4:44 of the second. A prolonged shift in the offensive zone eventually allowed K’Andre Miller to get the puck in the high slot and fire a shot past Sam Ersson to make it 3-1 on his third of the season.

The Flyers out-shot the Rangers, 17-8, in the second, but Igor Shesterkin turned aside all of them to keep the two-goal margin. Through two periods, shots were 28-23 Flyers.

The Rangers added to the lead further at 5:15 of the third. It was Filip Chytil getting a deflection this time, scoring his 11th goal of the season to make it 4-1.

Adam Fox iced the game into an empty net with a shorthanded goal at 16:53. Reilly Smith added a power-play goal at 18:15 to cap the scoring.

Shesterkin finished with 33 saves on 34 shots in the win. Ersson made 31 saves on 36 shots in the loss.

Miller, Fox, and Chytil each had a goal and an assist for the Rangers.

The Flyers are right back in action on Friday night, taking on the New York Islanders at 7:30 p.m.
