Phillies, Jeanmar Gomez strike one-year deal to avoid arbitration

The Philadelphia Phillies agreed to a one-year, $4.2 million deal with right-hander Jeanmar Gomez, leaving Cesar Hernandez as the only remaining player eligible for arbitration that hasn't been signed. The team agreed to a one-year contract with shortstop Freddy Galvis on Thursday.

Gomez, 28, gets a nice raise after making $1.4 million last season. This is final arbitration year, so he'll become a free agent following the 2017 season.

Jeanmar served as the teams' primary closer in 2016, saving 37 games in 43 opportunities. He had 34 saves and an ERA of 2.97 heading into September, but allowed 17 runs in eight innings during the final month of the season to finish with a 4.85 ERA. 

The Phillies have added some depth to their bullpen this season, trading for Pat Neshek and and signing Joaquin Benoit. The team also has Hector Neris, who many believe should have been the closer in the final month of 2016. He finished the year  with a 2.58 ERA, striking out 102 in 80 innings of work.
