The Philadelphia 76ers continue to tinker with the edges of their roster. The team is reportedly signing guard Lonnie Walker IV to a two-year, $3 million contract. Shams Charania of ESPN was first to report the move.

Walker, a native of Reading, Pennsylvania, spent this season playing for Zalgiris Kaunas in the EuroLeague. He averaged 13.6 points, 3.2 rebounds and 1.8 assists per game. Before going to play in Europe, Walker spent six seasons in the NBA between the San Antonio Spurs, Los Angeles Lakers and Brooklyn Nets. Walker was drafted with the 18th pick by the Spurs back in the 2018 NBA draft. In 322 career games in the NBA, Walker is averaging 9.8 points, 2.3 rebounds and 1.5 assists. He has shown an ability to effectively space the floor. The 26-year old shot 37.5% from 3-point range on 4.6 attempts per game over the past two seasons.

Walker’s contract with the Sixers includes a team option for the 2025-26 season, as reported by Kyle Neubeck of PHLY Sports. This is the same contract structure the team gave to Justin Edwards and Jared Butler. In order to make space on the roster for Walker, the Sixers will have to clear a roster spot. They can do this by waiving Chuma Okeke or David Roddy, who are both currently signed to 10-day contracts. According to Adam Aaronson of PhillyVoice, the Walker signing is “not expected to be made official immediately” due to logistical hurdles between FIBA and the NBA.

This season has been a disaster for the Sixers. However, they are continuing to make solid moves to round out the edges of the roster. Signing Walker, a proven NBA talent, is the perfect low-risk, high-reward move Philadelphia should be making at this point in the season.
