It was the biggest move needed this offseason for many Eagles fans and it’s done ahead of free agency starting.

On Wednesday, the Eagles and linebacker Zack Baun reached an agreement on a new deal.

That’s great news for the Eagles, who get Baun on a new deal before the free agency period starts next week and he would have been a top target for many teams.

After a less than noteworthy career in New Orleans, the Eagles took a flier on Baun last free agency and he quickly outplayed that contract on his way to an All-Pro selection and a finalist for Defensive Player of the Year.

In his first season in Philadelphia, Baun took the starting linebacker position and tallied 151 tackles, 3.5 sacks, five forced fumbles (plus a recovery), and and interception along with four defensed passes. He didn’t slow down in the playoffs and lead the league with 33 tackles and two interceptions in that time to go along with three more defensed passes, two fumble recoveries, and a forced fumble.

Now the Eagles get to maintain the linebacker they took a shot on and Baun gets the money he earned last season.

The deal is for three years and includes $34 million garaunteed while the $51 million figure puts him top-four in the league.

Of course free agency is a week away, so more extensions and record setting deals on the open market are expected that would otherwise have inflated Baun’s numbers.

The Eagles still have plenty of decisions to make with players like Dallas Goedert, Josh Sweat, Milton Williams, and Mekhi Becton in addition to the internal extensions they may want to look at implementing sooner rather than later for their draft picks and the like.
