Future Baseball Hall of Fame pitcher Max Scherzer isn’t ready to hang up his spikes just yet. The 40-year-old was set to be a key piece of the 2024 Texas Rangers rotation but was limited to nine starts due to offseason back surgery and in-season injury issues including a nerve issue, shoulder fatigue, and a hamstring strain. Still, the three-time Cy Young winner is hoping to move past an injury plagued 2024 and pitch somewhere in 2025.

Could that anywhere be Citizens Bank Park as a member of the Philadelphia Phillies?

Scherzer recently held a workout for scouts to prove he’s ready to go in 2025. According to SI.com’s Pat Ragazzo, the Phillies were one of eight teams that scouted Scherzer including the Atlanta Braves, Boston Red Sox, Chicago Cubs, Los Angeles Dodgers, New York Mets, New York Yankees and Toronto Blue Jays. Toronto and the Mets have reportedly shown the most interest.

It’s no surprise the Phillies would be interested in more starting pitching even if it’s a one-year contract on an aging vet. The club acquired lefty Jesus Luzardo during the offseason and are preparing for a mid-to-late season arrival of pitching prospect Andrew Painter. Scherzer could serve as bridge to Painter and fill the role vacated by Spencer Turnbull.

Is it likely? No, probably not but it’s worth keeping an eye on as 2025 MLB Spring Training approaches.
