Flyers Fall in Shootout After Last-Second Heroics

They earned a point, but the shootout foiled them again as the Flyers fell to the Ducks 5-4 in Anaheim.

The game started rather slowly, with both teams squandering early power play opportunities, failing to even get a shot on goal until over 8 minutes into the game.

The Ducks got a bit of sustained pressure during the middle of the period but could not convert.

Claude Giroux and Michael Raffl connected on a 2-on-1 but could not get it past Andersen.

The first period ended with each team having just 4 shots on goal.

The second period started the same way the first played out until about 6 minutes in.

Jakub Voracek picked up the puck going the other way before losing the handle. Giroux was able to pick it up, skate in the zone and fire a pass to Raffl who deposited the puck in the back of the net for a 1-0 lead.

Unfortunately the Ducks came right back after a poor decision by Andrew MacDonald lead to an odd man rush the other way and a CamFowler slapshot goal to tie it at 1.

This game really picked up the pace in the 2nd, with the Flyers taking the lead right back less than a minute later with a Wayne Simmonds goal, assisted by Brayden Schenn and Mark Streit, after hitting the post earlier in the game.

The Flyers then went to the power play which resulted in a tap-in goal for RJ Umberger, assisted by Nick Schultz and Sean Couturier, to take a 3-1 lead.

I said the pace picked up, and it definitely did. Ryan Getzlaf capped off the 5 goals in just over 5 minutes with a snipe past Mason on a 3-on-1 rush to make the game 3-2.

The Ducks managed to score again before the end of the period, with Sami Vatanen finding the puck behind the net and sneaking it behind Mason to tie the game at 3.

The 3rd period was pretty eventful up until MacDonald’s delay of game penalty with about 7 minutes to go, the Flyers 5th penalty kill of the night. They managed to kill off all 4 before that, but a scramble in front led to a goal by Patrick Maroon to make the score 4-3 Ducks with 5 minutes to play.

After a few heart-stopping plays in their own zone with the net empty, a shot by Streit and a scramble in front resulted in a game-tying goal by Simmonds with just 1 second remaining to get the Flyers a point.

Steve Mason made a few great saves in overtime, Matt Read missed a breakaway chance and the game went to a shootout.

The Flyers dropped the shootout earlier in the season to the Ducks, and history repeated itself here as the Ducks took this one as well.

The Flyers will be back in action on Saturday afternoon in Los Angeles against the Kings.
