Future Flyers Report: Royals Win in Shootout to Avoid Friday Shutout for Philly Teams

AHL:

The Lehigh Valley Phantoms fell to the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins Friday night by a score of 3 to 1. It was a relatively defensive contest with only 45 shots total in the game, the Phantoms getting 22 and Rob Zepp stopping 20 of 22. The 23rd shot for the Penguins was an empty net goal with 5 seconds remaining in the game to ice it.

The Penguins opened the scoring on the power play in the first period. The game remained at 1-0 through the second period. Early in the 3rd period Brandon Manning put home a power play goal for the Phantoms to tie the game. Scott Laughton and Andrew Gordon both assisted on Manning’s second goal of the year.

Unfortnately, the lead was short-lived as the Penguins scored the go-ahead and eventual winning goal just under six minutes later.

The game was quite chippy as well, as a Philadelphia-Pittsburgh game is expected to be with each team connecting once on the power play in 8 opportunities. However, there were no fighting majors handed out.

The Phantoms will get right back at it tonight as they return home for the first time in two weeks to face the Toronto Marlies.

ECHL:

With losses by both the Phantoms and Flyers, it was up to the Royals to save the night for the Philadelphia organization. It took a shootout, but the Royals managed to secure the victory in a tough road game against the Kalamazoo Wings. The Royals, like the Flyers, took advantage of their power play opportunities, scoring on 2 of their 4 chances. Reading won the game 4 to 3 after winning the shootout 2 to 1.

The Royals will play the 2nd game of their set against Kalamazoo tonight before traveling to Toledo to face the Walleye on Sunday night.

It should be a busy weekend for Philadelphia hockey as all three teams were in action last night and will be in action tonight. Hopefully we can get all 3 wins!
