Phillies Hold a Private Workout for Cuban Top Prospect

As reported this past week, the Phillies have expressed legitimate interest in slugging outfielder, Yasmani Tomas (23 years old). The Phillies attended Tomas’s workout at the Giants complex in the Dominican Republic. They must have seen something they liked from the Cuban prospect, leading them to hold a private workout at their own facility in the Dominican. Phillies GM Ruben Amaro is expected to be among the contingent of Phillies personal and scouts attending the workout.

Tomas will continue to have private workouts with several clubs over the next several days, although a Major League Team cannot sign Tomas until he is declared a free agent. Tomas did establish a permanent residency is Haiti and was cleared by the United States Department of the Treasury, so his free agency should be right around the corner. Since Tomas played five seasons in Cuba, he should be exempt from international signing bonus pools.
