Flyers come back falls short, fall to Coyotes in overtime

Arizona built a 3-1 led early in the second period. The Flyers got one back before the end of the period. Matt Read tied it early in the third. It wasn't enough as Oliver Ekman-Larsson scored in overtime to give Arizona a 4-3 victory on Saturday night in Glendale.

It was a sloppy start for the Flyers. They took a too many men on the ice call just 35 seconds in. The penalty killers managed to keep Arizona off the board.

Less than a minute after the penalty expired, the Flyers took a second too many men penalty and put the Coyotes back on the man advantage. Steve Mason made some nice saves to keep it scoreless.

Arizona would take an interference call to send the power play at 4:44 of the period. Like Arizona, Philadelphia did not score with the man advantage.

The Coyotes would get their third power play of the opening period at 8:45. This time Arizona made it count. Shane Doan four seconds into the power play to put the Coyotes up 1-0. Alex Goligoski and Christian Dvorak picked up the assists.

Philadelphia would answer just under four minutes later. Michael Raffl scored his first goal of the season to make it 1-1 at 12:31. Raffl defelected a Nick Schultz shot past Mike Smith. Brandon Manning had the other assist.

Boyd Gordon almost put the Flyers ahead shortly after but the play was reviewed and it was determined the puck never crossed the line.

Seconds after the review, Arizona took a 2-1 lead. Martin Hanzal put a rebound past Mason at 14:17. Jakob Chychrun and Max Domi had the assists.

Arizona outshot 13-10 in the period and took the 2-1 lead to the locker after 20 minutes.

The Flyers started the second period with 1:43 of carry over power play time. Instead of drawing even, the fell further behind. Brad Richardson scored short handed just 17 seconds in to put the Coyotes up 3-1.

Wayne Simmonds would get the Flyers back to within one at 6:16. Claude Giroux made a handful of nifty moves through the neutral zone to get  a shot. Smith made the save but Simmonds pounded home the rebound.

The Flyers would dictate play for much of the rest of the period but were unable to solve Smith again. Mason stopped everything he saw after the Richardson goal and the score remained 3-2 after 40 minutes.

Matt Read pulled the Flyers even at 4:36 of the third period. Read took a pass from Travis Konecny and went in on a breakaway. Read made a nice move in tight and beat Smith with a backhanded shot high to the stick side.

The teams exchanged power plays over the remainder of the game but neither could score and the teams would head to overtime.

The Flyers dominated play for the first two minutes of the overtime but Smith came up big multiple times. Arizona got the puck into the Flyers zone just once during the extra period and that was all it took.

Oliver Ekman-Larsson ended the game beating Mason on a delayed penalty call at 3:17. Larsson buried a pass from Hanzal to give the Coyotes the 4-3 win.

The Flyers are back in action on Tuesday when they take on the Blackhawks in Chicago.
