Phillies Sign Ronny Cedeño; Jimmy Rollins Heads To Pregnant Wife

Some Sunday Phillies news broke today as the Phillies prepare for Opening Day tomorrow in Arlington, Texas:

Jimmy Rollins Could Miss Opening Day

Rollins has left the team to be with his pregnant wife, Johari, according to Ryan Lawrence of the Daily News.   We have mentioned a few times that Rollins could miss time within the first week of the season.   It very well could be right away, meaning that Jayson Nix could be the Phillies' Opening Day shortstop.

Phillies Sign Ronny Cedeño

Wait a minute, didn't the Phillies just release Ronny Cedeño?   The Phillies did, indeed.   Also in the same report, Lawrence reports that the Phillies and Cedeño agreed to a minor league deal, assigning Cedeño to AAA.   The Phillies were due to pay Cedeño a $100,000 roster bonus if they assigned him to AAA, but released him instead.

Perhaps Cedeño tested the open market and did not find a deal he liked, so he re-signed with the Phillies.   Cedeño could find himself in the majors should the Phillies place Rollins on the paternity list.
