Phillies rumors: Cliff Lee ‘expected’ to throw for teams before spring training

While teams reportedly feel in the dark about former Philadelphia Phillies' ace Cliff Lee's intentions and capabilities for the 2016 season, that may soon change.

According to MLB.com's Joe Frisaro, Lee is among a pair of former Cy Young winners that are expected to pitch in front of scouts before Spring Training begins.

Cliff Lee and Tim Lincecum are expected to work out for teams before Spring Training gets underway.

The report is unclear as to if Lee will hold one workout for teams or have separate workouts for interested clubs. One would presume it will be the former.

Frisaro covers the Miami Marlins, who have been reported on numerous occasions by Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald to have interest in Lee. Given that the Marlins don't necessarily need to add a starter and that Lee's agent Derek Braunecker has suggested that he will only pitch for a 'perfect fit' in 2016, the Marlins continue to come off as a peculiar potential fit.

Any potential workout(s) that Lee ends up having will allow teams to determine exactly how much Lee has left and how far along he is in his progress after essentially sitting out a season. It will also give teams a chance to ask both him and Braunecker if he plans on joining a team in the near future or waiting into the season to pick a team to sign with.

The Phillies will pay Lee $12.5 million in 2016 as part of the buy-out for the $27.5 million option they had on him for 2016.
