Jerry Colangelo's Tenure With Sixers Is Ending

By Brandon Apter, Sports Talk Philly Staff

It's been just over seven weeks the the Philadelphia 76ers decided to part ways with Bryan ColangeloAn investigation revealed that Colangelo's wife was operating secret Twitter accounts that dispersed team intel and also insulted players and former front office executives. While the organization continues to search for a new general manager, head coach Brett Brown has been heading up basketball operations at the moment.

Even after Josh Harris and the Sixers organization moved forward in the removal of Bryan Colangelo, his father Jerry Colangelo has remained in an advisory role. Tim Bontemps of the Washington Post had a chance to catch up with Jerry Colangelo at voluntary USA Basketball workouts this past week. Jerry serves as the director of USA Basketball.

When asked about the Twitter accounts involving his son, Jerry Colangelo reiterated that it wouldn't be appropriate for Bryan and his family's sake. As far as Jerry's role with the Sixers, it's apparently over.

In discussing the situation, Colangelo termed his own tenure in Philadelphia — with which he served as a special adviser — as over, before clarifying that it is “over at the end of the year.”

A league source confirmed that account. While Colangelo is under contract through the end of this calendar year, and the 76ers will be honoring that contract, it won’t be renewed. It is an awkward ending to what was one of the stranger stories in recent NBA memory.

Jerry Colangelo has been involved in the NBA since 1966 and joined the Sixers organization as chairman of basketball operations in December 2015 after three abysmal rebuilding seasons under Sam Hinkie. Just four months after Jerry joined the Sixers, and four days after Sam Hinkie's resignation, Bryan Colangelo was introduced as the organization's new president of basketball operations. At that point, Jerry's assumed an advisory role.
