The Flyers had a one goal lead as time wound down in the third. Milan Lucic tied the game with under a minute to play. Jonathan Quick made 36 saves and Anze Kopitar scored the winner in the shootout as Los Angeles defeated the Flyers 3-2 on Tuesday night at the Wells Fargo Center.
The Flyers scored tha game's first goal at 3:41 of the first. Shayne Gostisbehere scored his first NHL goal on the power play to give the Flyers an early 1-0 lead. Claude Giroux and Jakub Voracek picked up the assists.
The Flyers got a second chance on the man advantage in the first ten minutes when Jordan Nolan was called for roughing at 6:02. The Kings penalty killers were able to kill off the penalty and the score remained 1-0.
Los Angeles would get their first chance on the power play at 13:44 when Nick Schultz was called for interference. That's when Jamie McBain tied the game with his first goal of the season.
Philadelphia out shot the Kings 14-11 in the period and the teams went to the locker room tied 1-1.
The Flyers would get an early power play to begin the second when Jake Muzzin was called for high sticking. Philadelphia was unable to capitalize on the man advantage.
The Kings had chance of their own just three minutes after the Muzzin penalty expired and, like Philadelphia, were unable to score.
Midway through the period, the Flyers appeared to have beaten Jonathan Quick. The played was ruled no goal on the ice. After a rather lengthy review, the call was upheld and ruled it was kicked in.
The period would end with Philadelphia having back to back power plays that they were unable to capitalize on and the teams were still tied 1-1 after 40 minutes.
The teams went back and forth through the first ten plus minutes of the third. That's when Giroux put the Flyers ahead. The captain scored his sixth goal of the season at 11:11.
The Kings would get the equalizer with the goalie pulled. Milan Lucic tied the game on his sixth goal of the season with 55 seconds left.
The overtime period did not lack excitment. Both teams had chances but both goaltenders were up to the challenge and the game would head to the shootout.
Sam Gagner, Giroux and Voracek were all stopped on their chances. Anze Kopitar beat Mason to give Los Angeles the victory.
Steve Mason made 38 saves in the loss.
The Flyers will be in action next on Thursday night when host San Jose.
