Pregame: Extended Hamels Gets the Ball in Game 1 of Crucial Series

Locked and loaded, Cole Hamels makes his first start after Ruben Amaro Jr. and Co. worked out a  huge commitment to the best home grown pitcher in the Phillies' system since Robin Roberts.  An essential move that leaves a wonderful sign of things to come from the southpaw as he continues his prime years. Between his new contract, an All Star campaign, and his continued work with his foundation it's no doubt the Hamels is the most important figure in the club right now.

The Phillies head to Atlanta for the most important series of the season. Should they win two out of three, they might think twice before pressing the big red button.  Something tells me we're still in for some surprises in the next few days.

With Polanco out, Kevin Frandsen is set to get his first major league action since 2012. Playing third tonight is Mike Fontenot who could win over the everyday duties for now after a brutal few days at the hot corner from Ty Wigginton.

The Braves are 13-7 this month and have been a great team looking to buy at next week's deadline. They're in the mix for Zack Greinke and for all we know, the Phils could be facing him on Sunday again.

For now, they hand the ball to former All Star, Ben Sheets. In his prime, he was one of the best pitchers in baseball. Injuries cost him and he eventually left the game all together, only to work out for some teams earlier in the season. In two starts, he's 2-0 with a 0.00 ERA, 11 Ks, 4 BBs, and a 0.92 WHIP .  His fastball sits at around 90 mph, which makes me wonder if a team (such as a the recently hot Phillies) is due to hit him around a bit.

Tonight's line up: Rollins 6. Victorino 8. Utley 4. Howard 3. Ruiz 2. Pence 9. Pierre 7. Fontenot 5. Hamels 1
