Report: MCW is NBA’s Rookie of the Year

Brett Brown said before the season ended that there is zero doubt in his mind that Michael Carter-Williams would be named rookie of the year. It looks like he was right.

According to NJ.com, Michael Carter-Williams will become the first Philadelphia 76er to be named Rookie of the Year since Allen Iverson in 1997. The report states that the award announcement is expected to be made next week.

Only the second ROY winner in franchise history, the recognition comes as no surprise. Carter-Williams was the consensus top rookie wire-to-wire, kicking the season off with 22 points, 12 assists and 9 steals. After that performance, Magic Johnson tweeted, “I just got done watching the guy I think will be the Rookie of The Year, Michael Carter-Williams of the 76ers.”

He finished with averages of 16.7 points, 6.3 assists and 6.2 rebounds for the season. All three of those led rookies in their respective categories. Defensively, Brown said Carter-Williams is "arguably the best defensive rebounding rookie guard, statistically, in the history of the game.”

The 11th overall pick in last June’s draft out of Syracuse, “MCW” should serve as a sign of good things to come in the Sam Hinkie era. Carter-Williams was his first player selected as General Manager and with two top-10 picks in this upcoming draft, Hinkie’s ability to select the right pieces for a winning team seems promising.
