The shot that most Flyer fans didn’t see go in…. and wished it hadn’t.
Game Six of the 2010 Stanley Cup Playoffs was a thrilling game, but a stunning defeat for the Orange and Black. Patrick Kane scored just 4:10 into overtime to give the Chicago Blackhawks their first laps around a rink with Lord Stanley’s’ Cup since 1961. It was on a wrist shot by Kane, on a horrific angle that found a hole between the pads of journeyman Michael Leighton, an angle so sharp that the puck wedged itself under the net padding inside the goal. Not even the goal judge saw it cross the line, none of the 17,000 plus fans saw it go in, and no one in the world — except for Kane — could believe it actually went in.
The Flyers’ run to the Cup was simply unbelievable as the Flyers made it into the playoffs on the last day, on the last shot, beating the NY Rangers in a shootout. Then they beat their nemesis Martin Brodeur and the Devils in five games. Then, the epic climbout from under a 3-0 hole vs. the Boston Bruins to win in seven, and then bouncing the Montreal Canadiens out in five games as well. This abrupt ending was crushing for the Flyers and their fans, as this miracle run to the Cup Finals ended with a thud.
The game itself was outstanding, as the Flyers came back from 1-0 and 3-2 deficits, with Scott Hartnell tying the game at three with just four minutes left in the third period. Although the Flyers were outshot 41-24 for the game, the action was excellent and everyone in the building cheered the Flyers on to push the series to a seventh game. Although it was not to be, this group of Flyers gave all of their fans a heck of a ride. It once again proved that as long as you make the playoffs, truly anything can happen.
