This Week in Flyers History: Week Ending November 22

Flyers history

November 15, 1992

It was a night where the “Crazy Eights” were simply overpowering. The Flyers blitzed the visiting Ottawa Senators 7-2 as rising star Eric Lindros picked up his first career hat trick as a Flyer.

Lindros started off the scoring just 41 seconds in, slamming home a rebound, assisted by Mark Recchi and defenseman Dmitri Yushkevich. Just over 10 minutes later, left winger Mark Pederson scored his third of the year, making it 2-0.

With Flyer defenseman Garry Galley in the box for tripping, Ottawa’s Neil Brady cut the lead in half with a power-play goal and the Flyers led 2-1 after one period.

In the second, all three of the Crazy Eights scored goals, in exactly a 3:33 minute span. How’s that for some numerology?

Mark Recchi made it 3-1 assisted by Terry Carkner at 4:04. Just 42 seconds later, Brent Feydk got into the action, banging one home past the Senators’ Peter Sidorkiewicz to make it 4-1, assisted by Lindros and Recchi and the ‘E -Train’ got his second of the night at 7:37 picking up some loose change in front of the net to blow the game open. The assists by, who else, Recchi and Fedyk, making it 5-1.

With the Senators shell shocked, the Flyers didn’t stop there. Winger Claude Boivin knocked home his third of the year, assisted by "Woody" – Keith Acton just 38 seconds later and gave the Flyers a commanding 6-1 lead. Ottawa’s Jeff Lazaro would score with just 1:26 left in the second to make it 6-2, but this one was all but over.

There was just one more thing left to do: Get No. 88 the hat trick.

At the start of the third, Ottawa’s Neil Brady was whistled for a hooking minor just 37 seconds into the period. With the Flyers going on the power play, the Crazy Eights were one again, ready to strike.

On a slightly broken play, Fedyk gained the zone and flipped the puck to Recchi on the off wing. Recchi looked up, found Lindros in the slot and slid a room service backhand pass to him. Lindros ripped a bullet of a shot all in one motion past Sidorkiewicz to notch his third of the night, the hat trick, at 1:53 and a 7-2 score.

The Flyers faithful cheered for well over a minute as baseball caps rained down from the stands. The Crazy Eights ended the night with five goals and seven assists between them in a truly dominating performance.

Thanks to the wonders of YouTube, you can see all three of Lindros goals that night below.

With the current squad struggling to dent the twine, it’s quite refreshing to see a Flyers team score some goals, isn’t it?
