Utley activated; Loewen, one time top pitching prospect, returns to MLB

Todd Zolecki reports that after this afternoon's game, Delier Hinojosa and Jordan Danks were both optioned to Triple-A Lehigh Valley. Replacing them are Chase Utley who will be activated from the 15-Day DL and pitcher Adam Loewen.

Meghan Montemurro tweeted that Pete Mackanin will most likely have Utley starting at 2B tomorrow night in San Diego while Cesar Hernandez will could spell the rest of the infield. He also mentioned Freddy Galvis could see some time in CF to rest Herrera.

Adam Loewen on the other hand is a nice story. Loewen was drafted by the Orioles in 2002 and became a top pitching prospect. Injuries and shaky results would find him eventually giving up on pitching and he would convert to a position player where he would spend a few seasons bounding around various organizations.

Loewen began pitching in the Phillies' system last year and this season between Reading and Lehigh Valley, the southpaw holds a 2.01 ERA and 73 strike outs over 58.1 innings. It's a great comeback for someone who hasn't pitched in the big leagues since 2007.
