Nick Foles' gear from his seven-touchdown performance against the Oakland Raiders earlier this season will have some company at the Pro Football Hall of Fame in the form of LeSean McCoy's game-used equipment from his record setting day Sunday against the Detroit Lions is being sent to Canton, Ohio.
McCoy set the Eagles franchise record for rushing yards in a single game Sunday dashing through the snow for 217 yards against the Lions, surpassing Steve Van Buren's previous franchise mark of 205 against the Steelers back in 1949.
Some of McCoy's biggest gains came in the most critical moments of a character defining victory for the NFC East leading Eagles.
McCoy ran 40 yards for a touchdown on his first carry of the fourth quarter, he went 57 yards for another TD on his third carry of the fourth quarter and he added a 26-yarder late.
“Played all my games in Pennsylvania,” the Harrisburg native McCoy said. “But this was the worst game I’ve played in weather-wise.”
Then he paused. And smiled a huge smile after the game.
“And my best game, too.”
The Detroit Lions, nor the eight inches of snow that had blanked Lincoln Financial Field Sunday could slow down McCoy who remains the league's scrimmage yard leader this season.
“It was tough,” he said. “It was definitely tough. Normal footing and traction that we get from stopping and cutting, I couldn’t really plant like I usually plant. But the [offensive linemen] were giving me so much room.
“And it’s a mental thing. Obviously it’s going to be tough because it’s the snow and the weather, but you don’t think about it while you’re running. Only if you think about it, it sets you back a little bit.”
While Chip Kelly's in-game adjustments and some altered blocking schemes up front certainly aided McCoy's record setting day, the biggest key was as simple as a cleat change that sprung the back into the franchise record book.
Beyond that though, something as simple as running downhill rather than laterally became integral on a field where getting footing was nearly impossible.
“People really don’t know,” McCoy said. “They just see the moves that I make, but I actually like to run between the tackles. It gives me so much different leverage. Do I want to go up the middle? Bring it outside? Reverse it? So I actually like to run in between the tackles. You see your holes.”
While it certainly is possible that a bust of LeSean McCoy may ultimately reside in Canton Ohio someday, the 25-year old's uniform has already beaten him to the Hall of Fame thanks to Sunday's historic performance.
