Around the NFL: Saints “relatively close” to extending Brees

Brees-Saints negotiating deal: According to ESPN's Ed Werder, the New Orleans Saints and quarterback Drew Brees are "relatively close" to reaching an agreement on a contract extension.

Werder noted that his sources told him Monday that the two parties resumed talks and that there has been dialogue regarding an extension for about a week.

"It looks like something could get done," Werder's source told him.

The two sides only have four days to agree on a deal, as Brees has said he will cease negotiations once the regular season kicks off.

The 37-year-old has one year left on his five-year, $100 million contract he signed back in 2012. If a deal's not reached by Sunday, the future Hall of Famer will become an unrestricted free agent this offseason.

Despite his age, Brees is still one of the NFL's top quarterbacks. He has thrown for more than 4,000 yards the last 10 seasons and has led the league in passing four of the last five seasons.

Unfortunately for Brees, the Saints have been unable to surround him with adequate talent, especially on the defensive side of the ball. Over the last two years, the Saints' defense has been towards the bottom in yards allowed and points allowed.

Goff inactive for Rams: Los Angeles Rams head coach Jeff Fisher confirmed that number one overall pick Jared Goff will be watching Monday night's season opener in street clothes.

The Rams will keep two quarterbacks active for Monday's game–28-year-old Case Keenum and 2015 third-round pick, Sean Mannion. Keenum will serve as the starter and Mannion will be his backup. In an emergency situation, Fisher said that punter Johnny Hekker will be the team's reserve quarterback.

"I just want him to feel and sense and absorb the pressures of Week 1," Fisher said, via NFL Network. He's going to be a great great player. As we've said from day one, we're not rushing him. We don't have to rush it. I'm really happy with where he is right now. It's unfair to compare him to anybody else. I know Philly has got their situation; it's a little different. … Jared is in a good place right now. He's done some really good things, so I'm really pleased with his progress."

Goff finished the preseason 22-of-49 for 232 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions. The Rams are being patient with their future franchise quarterback, and are taking a different approach than the Philadelphia Eagles are with second overall pick, Carson Wentz, who's getting the nod as the team's starter for week one.

Fisher noted that Goff could be promoted to the second stringer for the Rams' home opener week two against the Seattle Seahawks. He and Mannion will rotate scout team reps during practice this week, and a decision regarding the quarterback depth chart will be made by the coaching staff.

Patriots release G Kline: After not being involved in the Patriots' trade to the Eagles for cornerback Eric Rowe, offensive lineman Josh Kline was released by the team Wednesday morning.

The 26-year-old lineman was initially reported to be heading to Philadelphia, and was even rumored to be involved in another trade the Eagles were discussing

However, the Patriots yanked Kline's name from the Rowe trade last minute and kept his rights before releasing him Wednesday.

Kline started 13 games last season for the Patriots, playing both left and right guard. With the consistent need for interior lineman around the league, Kline isn't expected to be unemployed long.
