Clippers set franchise record for margin of victory in blowout of Sixers

Wow, was that a game for the history books. Or one you will want to forget, if you’re in Philadelphia’s locker room. The 76ers dropped their sixth in a row in embarrassing fashion Sunday night to the Clippers, 123-78.

There are not many bright spots to follow in this recap, so here’s one right off the bat: it was not the most points they’ve allowed during the losing streak, just short of the 125 Atlanta put up on Jan. 31. That’s about where the bright spots end.

Philadelphia trailed 13-0 just 2:24 into the game. Brett Brown called a timeout, and thinks got worse. They lead swelled to 46-15 before the quarter expired, and Blake Griffin had missed the majority of the period with a leg contusion. The 46 points was one shy of their franchise record for first quarter points allowed, and the Clippers came oh-so-close to matching it. Evan Turner was teed up for a technical foul at the close of the quarter, allowing Darren Collison to add another point. Though the score read 47-15 with 12:00 left in the second, it technically counted as a second quarter point.

Things did not get better from there, and actually got worse before getting, not good, but not as bad. The Sixers, who came into the game 29th in three-point shooting, tried to get back into the game by chucking three’s. That did not work and they went 3-28 from three. In games in which they have attempted 21 or more three’s, that percentage of 10.7% establishes a new franchise-low.

We could give you every stat from the game and it still would not explain how bad they played. You just had to see it to believe it, from being held to five points through the 4:37 mark to allowing to three’s in the final 30 seconds of the quarter.

I’ll summarize the game with this stat: The Sixers’ leading scorer, Tony Wrotten scored 21 points. That total is the margin they trailed by less than five minutes into the game. No, they did not come back.
