Late Home Run A Difference-Maker in Loss vs. Mets

Final: Mets 3, Phillies 2

WP: Jonathan Niese (3-2, 1.95 ERA) LP: Aaron Harang (3-3, 2.38 ERA) SV:Jeurys Familia (12)

Philadelphia, PA – Aaron Harang was solid again over seven innings, but a key homer late made the difference in Saturday's loss to the Mets.

The game was lacking more than just excitement early, with both New York and The Phillies combining for eight hits over the game’s first 4 ½ innings. In the bottom of the fifth, the Mets manufactured a run after a leadoff double by Ruben Tejada, who scored when Lucas Duda reached first on a fielding error by Cezar Hernandez.

The teams’ offenses heated up as the sun went down Saturday evening, however, and the Phillies broke through in the bottom of the sixth with a pair of runs off New York starter Jonathan Niese. Ben Revere beat out a close throw by Dilson Herrera to reach on an error, and stole second before coming around to score on a Jeff Francour sac-fly. Carlos Ruiz then doubled to plate Darin Ruf, who singled to follow up Revere, giving the Phillies a 2-1 lead.

The Mets took the lead back quickly in the following frame. Juan Lagares, known more for his glovework than his bat, hammered a high cutter from Harang over the center field wall for a two-run home run, giving New York a 3-2 lead after seven. Luis Garcia nearly put the game out of reach in the eighth when he loaded the bases on a hit and two walks, but recovered to end the inning on a 1-2-3 double play.

The Phillies attempt at a rally in the bottom of the eighth fell through. A hard hit ball by Ruiz couldn’t escape the glove of Tejada at short, who threw to first for an inning-ending double play. Chase Utley fought back with a one-out single in the ninth, but Jeurys Familia shut the door for his twelfth save of the year to give the Mets the win.
