Sixers release details on uniform unveiling event

This is not brand-new news, but rather a confirmation of what was already speculated. As Philadelphia 76ers Director of Public Relations Michael Preston revealed last month, the team will release their newly designed uniforms on June 18. The team confirmed that today, while releasing more information on the event.

They will officially unveil the new jerseys and shorts at the Wells Fargo Center on the night of the eighteenth, with an event taking place starting at 7 p.m. at the Wells Fargo Center. Television announcer Marc Zumoff, along with sideline reporter Molly Sullivan will host the event and will be joined by a number of Sixers legends and figures, including Billy Cunningham, Darryl Dawkins, Moses Malone, Bobby Jones and Allen Iverson and Barbara Chamberlain-Lewis, the sister of the late Wilt Chamberlain. These legends will be joined by members of the current team and staff.

In the release, the team states that fans will be treated to “digital presentations” and appearances from the team dancers and Franklin. They will also have the opportunity to participate in Q & A sessions with the special guests.

The appearance of the jerseys has been speculated to look like the lining inside of Nerlens’ Noel suit jacket he wore at the NBA Draft Lottery last month. Adding to this theory is the fact that Scott O’Neil said they would be sending Nerlens Noel with a treat up to the lottery, and further adding “the suit is ready”–why else would Scott O’Neil have any commentary on the suit Noel was wearing?

O’Neil himself gave fans a little bit of a preview of what to expect in the new jerseys:

“In creating a new uniform, we wanted a clean, modern style that would also honor our past,” said Sixers Chief Executive Officer Scott O’Neil. “These designs integrate key elements of uniforms worn by legends Wilt Chamberlain, Julius Erving and Billy Cunningham, and bring them together in one seamless presentation. The uniform reflects another key element of our updated brand identity reflecting a spirit of strength and patriotism which we cannot wait to share with our fans.”

Billy Cunningham, who of course is rooted in so much Sixers history, giving him ample perspective, offered his preview of the jerseys:

“These will be special uniforms that honor three specific time periods in Sixers history.  As someone who helped design the 76-77 uniforms, I am excited that there will be hallmark elements from that era incorporated in the 2015 uniforms.  Fans will love how they pay homage to the past while celebrating a new era of Sixers basketball.”

Admission to the unveiling is free to all fans. Fans will be able to order the new jerseys online immediately following the release.
