Crawford, Blackhawks Hand Flyers Another Shutout Loss

By Kevin Durso, Sports Talk Philly editor

In the Flyers first game of November, they simply couldn't find a way to solve Corey Crawford.

The Blackhawks netminder was flawless, nullifying every Flyers scoring chance along the way. Two quick Chicago strikes in the second period were enough, as Chicago handed the Flyers their third shutout loss of the season, 3-0, on Wednesday night.

The game was played at a hectic pace throughout with the puck bouncing constantly and both teams getting dangerous chances throughout.

Chicago had the only two power play chances in the first period and failed to score. Shots were 11-8 Chicago through 20 minutes.

The Blackhawks had the next two power play opportunities in the second period and on their fourth power play of the night, made sure to take advantage.

A quick shot off the face-off by Cody Franson was stopped by Brian Elliott but the rebound was left for Artem Anisimov who scored to get Chicago on the board at 8:58 of the second.

Just 20 seconds later, an unfortunate bounce of the puck went over the stick of Robert Hagg and allowed Jonathan Toews to go the other way on a breakaway. Toews made a nice move to open up Elliott and slide the puck through the five-hole for his fourth goal of the season to quickly make it 2-0 Chicago.

The Flyers had two power play chances in the last half of the period, but failed to take advantage, leaving them with a two-goal deficit after 40 minutes. Shots through two periods were 23-20 Chicago.

The Flyers came out firing in the third, opening up an 8-1 shot advantage early. But they failed to convert on another power play, keeping the margin at two going into the final stages of the third period.

The Flyers had a couple of close calls, but never managed to solve Crawford. Alex DeBrincat scored into an empty net to seal the Chicago victory.

Crawford made 35 saves in the shutout win. Elliott stopped 32 in defeat. The Flyers fell to 6-6-1 on the season as a result.

The Flyers have a quick turnaround, returning to the ice on Thursday night for the second half of a back-to-back against the St. Louis Blues at 8 p.m.
