Travis Konecny powers Flyers past Rangers in OT, 4-3

What looked like an easy Flyers regulation win turned out to be anything but. Yet another overtime period was necessary — a common theme this preseason — but Travis Konecny secured the win for the Orange and Black.

Konecny was far from the only young Flyer to score — all Flyer goals came from the young guns — and though the Flyers found themselves in an early hole, they carved out a preseason 4-3 win Tuesday against the New York Rangers.

The Flyers led, 3-2, throughout much of the third period, but with 2:21 left on the clock, Michael Grabner snagged his own blocked pass and slapped it under Brian Elliott's pads for the equalizer. With 1:38 left in extra time, though, Konecny sped across the slot for a chance, drew a penalty, found his own rebound and banked it off of Ondrej Pavelec for the game-winner.

Much like the prior game on Monday, the Rangers found themselves on the board early, courtesy of Paul Carey's first tally of the preseason. Free-agent signing David Desharnais doubled the lead just over two minutes later.

In between both goals, though, Samuel Morin looked to provide a spark and dropped the gloves against Bobby Farnham, a known Flyers foe. Surely out of concern for the damage 'Big Sam' could inflict on the much-smaller Farnham, officials split the fight up. Morin re-energized the building before the period could end, lighting the lamp for the first time this preseason.

Scott Laughton finished a give-and-go pass from Michael Raffl at the doorstep to knot the game at 2 early in the 2nd period, and the Flyers found themselves with a distinct shot advantage going into the 3rd.

Early in the 3rd stanza, Oskar Lindblom camped out in the slot and tipped home an Andrew MacDonald shot from the point for his first goal on North American soil. The lead held for much of the rest of the game, until Grabner had something to say about it in its final stages.

Making his second start on the left wing, Claude Giroux found himself much more energized. He had two primary assists (one of which was on Konecny's game-winner) and four shots on goal.

The win gives the Orange and Black their second of the preseason, and first in nearly a week — since the 3-2 overtime win in one of last Wednesday's split-squad games.

Next up for the Flyers is another preseason contest Thursday, when they host Boston. Puck drop is set for 7 p.m., and whether or not this one ends in OT will be determined.
