After signing a couple special teams players to keep them around for next season, the Eagles moved on from a long time special teams leader.
On Friday afternoon, the team announced that it had released 2017 special teams captain Chris Maragos.

Maragos was known as an excellent special teams contributor, but suffered an injury that landed him on IR during the Eagles Super Bowl winning season in 2017. While he was with the team in 2018, he was on the PUP list all season long and the only news on him came in the form of his having another successful surgery.
His deal was restructured due to the injury so that he doesn’t have a major cap hit following his release.
Maragos spent four season with the Eagles making 29 tackles and forcing a fumble. He did play minimal snaps as an emergency safety.
Maragos would likely be an expensive special teams player that hasn’t played in one and a half season. With Rodney McLeod restructuring his deal, Malcolm Jenkins entrenched in his position, Tre Sullivan coming on strong at the end of last season and both Avonte Maddox and Rasul Douglas having the skill sets to play safety, there was no need to bring Maragos back as an emergency safety.
Both LaRoy Reynolds and D.J. Alexander are special teams aces that played with the Birds in 2018 that the team could look to re-sign.
