Eagles announce 53-man roster

At 4:00 p.m. on Saturday afternoon the NFL required all 32 teams to submit their final 53-man rosters for the upcoming season. After a string of cuts yesterday the Eagles had trimmed the roster to 70 players, and had to cut 17 more players before today's deadline.

The Eagles began their cuts with guard Josh Andrews, and later Geoff Mosher of 97.5 The Fanatic reported that tackle Dillon Gordon also did not make the roster. Linemen Taylor Hart, Dallas Thomas and Aaron Neary joined Andrews and Gordon in the unemployment line.

Offseason addition Chance Warmack was given a one-year extension prior to the deadline, but the other moves will leave the Eagles thin on the offensive line, with just Warmack, guard/center Stefen Wisniewski, and tackle Halapoulivaati Vaitai left to back up the starters.

Carson Wentz's college teammate CJ Smith did not make the team. Camp body Jomal Wiltz also was cut from the corner group today after Aaron Grymes was cut yesterday. Grymes and Smith both spent last season on the Eagles practice squad. Recently acquired in a trade, Dexter McDougle made the team as the fifth cornerback. He joins Ronald Darby, Jalen Mills, Patrick Robinson, and Rasul Douglas.

Jaylen Watkins, who fills in at corner and safety also made the team after suffering a minor injury in the preseason finale against the New York Jets.

At linebacker, the Eagles are keeping six with a backup for each starter. Nigel Bradham, Jordan Hicks, and Mychal Kendricks will be joined by Najee Goode, Joe Walker, and special teams ace Kamu Grugier-Hill. Don Cherry was cut yesterday and is a strong practice squad candidate.

Nate Gerry did not make the team as a linebacker, and did miss time this preseason due to injury. Gerry is the only Eagles draft pick to not make the roster, and is a practice squad candidate.

In a bit of a surprise move the Eagles are keeping both Corey Clement and Donnell Pumphrey on the 53-man roster. Byron Marshall did not make the team despite appearing with the Eagles last season and playing well in camp and preseason.

LeGarrette Blount also survived cuts after rumors swirled a couple weeks ago that he was not guaranteed to make the roster, meaning that the Eagles will carry five running backs into the season.

With six linebackers, and five running backs, the Eagles also are carrying six wide receivers, with Bryce Treggs getting cut and Marcus Johnson and fifth round pick Shelton Gibson both making the roster.

The tight ends are as expected with Zach Ertz, Brent Celek, and Trey Burton. Billy Brown is a strong prospect and a practice squad candidate if he does not get claimed by another team.
