Phillies, Marlins to Square Off as Victorino Retires

By Matt Rappa, Sports Talk Philly editor

Winners of nine of their last 11 home games, the Philadelphia Phillies (60-48) and RHP Vince Velasquez will take on rookie RHP Trevor Richards and the Miami Marlins (46-64) in the second of a four-game set Friday evening at Citizens Bank Park. Prior to the game, the career of Phillies 2008 World Series champion center fielder Shane Victorino will be honored as he officially retires on a one-day contract with the club.

The Phillies snapped an 0-38 streak to start the season when trailing after eight innings, as the club erased a 2-1 deficit with a four-run ninth inning Thursday evening. Third baseman Maikel Franco launched a three-run, walk-off blast to left, as Marlins reliever Kyle Barraclough fell to 0-5 with his sixth blown save of the season. Phillies starter Nick Pivetta gave up just two runs on four hits, no walks and 89 pitches, while striking out seven batters. Rhys Hoskins also homered, his 40th career blast out of 149 games.

Velasquez is coming off of a stellar July, posting the lowest ERA among all National League pitchers (minimum 15 innings pitched) and the fourth-lowest in Major League Baseball, 0.95 (2 ER, 19.0 IP). In eight starts this season against National League East opponents, Velasquez is 2-4 with a 4.25 ERA (17 ER, 36.0 IP).
