Deja Vu: Eagles Beat Falcons on Goal Line Stand

By Matthew Kaplan, Sports Talk Philly Staff

It was only fitting that the Falcons season starts the same way it ended last season. While the game wasn’t pretty it got the job done as the Eagles won 18 to 12.

While the Eagles pulled out the victory, the offense looked shaky at best. Our Eagles only mustered 186 total yards with 1 turnover and a clumsy play on special teams; with the main weapon being Nelson Agholor for most of the game. While the Falcons managed 338 yards, most of them being through the air to Julio Jones.

In a game that was ugly and eerily similar to the divisional playoff game back in January there were bright spots. The first and most obvious one being the second edition of the Philly Special. While it wasn’t a touchdown, it did provide some excitement and a spark to a team that needed it at that time in the game. Another positive to take from tonight’s game was the effectiveness and the willingness of sticking to the run as Jay Ajayi ran in 2 touchdowns and, along with the rest of the backs, seemed to get better as the game went on. Finally was the bend but don’t break mentality of the defense. While they gave up a lot of yards and were fairly easy to move the ball against they didn’t allow much in the red zone. Including the last play of the game which we have seen something much like it before.
