Ruling Gives Phillies Cubs’ 2014 Rule 5 Pick

The Phillies very famously selected players David Herndon, Michael Martinez, and most recently Ender Enciarte.   Looking to 2014, the Phillies could have not one, but TWO Michael Martinezes on the roster after a baseball ruling goes in the Phillies' favor.

MLB.com's Carrie Muskat reports that the Cubs' 2012 selection of Lendry Castillo did not meet Rule 5 rules:

The Cubs… lost [their Rule 5 selection] selection because of a grievance filed by the Phillies. In December 2011, the Cubs selected right-hander Lendy Castillo from the Phillies’ organization. Castillo spent most of the 2012 season on the disabled list with a groin injury, and appeared in 13 games for the Cubs.

The odds are, however, that the Phillies would not carry two Rule 5 players on their roster.   The Cubs' pick is higher than the Phillies due to their poorer performance, but the Phillies probably don't have the roster room to carry one, let alone two players for the full season.  Any player selected in the Rule 5 draft must remain on the selecting team's major league roster for the full season, or else that player must be offered back to his original club.
