The Phillies made some more cuts prior to their game against the Yankees in Tampa, Fla., this afternoon. Right-hander Jake Thompson and 2016 Rule-5 pick, Tyler Goeddel were the two notable moves.

With a crowded starting rotation at the big league level, it was going to take a lot for Thompson to make the big league roster out of camp. Jake dealt with some injury issues early on, appearing in just two games. He allowed two hits and struck out four in 5.1 innings of work. The 23-year-old starter, acquired as a part of the Cole Hamels trade with Texas, posted a 3-6 record to go along with a 5.70 ERA in 10 Major League starts for the Phillies last season.

Also heading to minor league camp is outfielder Tyler Goeddel. The Phillies kept him on the 25-man roster all season in 2016, and he showed some solid numbers with consistent playing time. In the month of May, Goeddel slashed .288/.342/.452 with two doubles, two triples, two homers, nine runs scored and seven RBI's.  He showed a plus arm in left field, throwing out a few runners at the plate, but once Cody Asche returned and Aaron Altherr was in the mix, Goeddel's playing time dwindled. Tyler hit .250 in 28 spring at-bats, driving in four runs and striking out 12 times. There's a strong chance Goeddel starts the year in Double-A, according to Todd Zolecki, in order to get playing time on a regular basis. The Phillies' Triple-A outfield will likely include Dylan Cozens, Nick Williams and Roman Quinn, leaving Goeddel in a position to come off the bench if he were there.

In addition to Thompson and Goeddel being optioned to the minors, right-hander Dalier Hinojosa, infielder Hector Gomez and catcher Logan Moore were reassigned to minor league camp.
