While signing RHP David Robertson this week, the Philadelphia Phillies likely removed themselves from contention of signing perennial high-end southpaw, Zach Britton.
Thus, to add spring training competition to their already-existing left-handed reliever core that includes Jose Alvarez, Austin Davis, Adam Morgan, James Pazos and Ranger Suarez, the club inked former Los Angeles Dodgers LHP Edward Paredes to a minor-league contract on Friday, according to ZoneCoverage.com's Brandon Warne.
Paredes, 32, is 3-0 with a career 4.50 ERA, 19-2 strikeout-to-walk ratio and 1.063 WHIP spanning 25 relief appearances and 16 innings since debuting with the Dodgers in July 2017.
The Dominican Republic native made his rounds around the league prior to his debut; he signed with the Seattle Mariners as an amateur free agent in 2005 and was later released in 2011. Two years later, Paredes signed with the Cleveland Indians in January and was released after three months. In 2015, the left-hander signed with the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim for one season, and then the Detroit Tigers in November 2016 before being plucked by the Dodgers in the Rule 5 draft just weeks thereafter.
While not explicitly specified, the deal likely includes an invitation to spring training.
