Phillies’ Hammer Shines in MLB Debut Against Brewers

By Matt Rappa, Sports Talk Philly editor

Philadelphia Phillies rookie RHP J.D. Hammer's MLB debut could not have gone any better Sunday afternoon at Miller Park, despite the team down by six runs in the sixth inning.

Facing Christian Yelich, Ryan Braun and Mike Moustakas, Hammer retired the side in order via two lineouts and a swinging strikeout on 19 pitches and 12 strikes; he induced one called strike, two swinging strikes, seven foul balls and two fly balls.

Hammer is the second-ever Phillie to wear No. 65, preceded by only Eddie Oropesa in 2001.

The three Brewers batters in their careers have a combined: two MVPs, nine All-Star appearances, one batting title, one Gold Glove, seven Silver Sluggers, one Rookie of the Year, and one World Series championship.

Hammer was promoted prior to Saturday's game against the Brewers, replacing the injury list-bound RHP Pat Neshek. Ironically, the Fort Collins, Colorado, native was acquired from the Colorado Rockies in July 2017 as part of the Phillies' trade of the All-Star Neshek.

The 24-year-old posted a combined 1.61 ERA in 14 relief appearances in the minors this year; he made just one appearance at Triple-A Lehigh Valley after being promoted from Double-A Reading on Tuesday.

Hammer was promoted four times in the Phillies system overall since last August. His performance on Sunday was a perfect justification of the fast rise.
