Late Turnovers Hurt Eagles in 1st Loss of Season to Lions

By Kevin Durso, Sports Talk Philly editor

Just when it looked like the Eagles were going to recover from their toughest game of the season, mistakes set in and handed them defeat.

A fumble by Ryan Mathews and the first interception by Carson Wentz, both in the fourth quarter, gave the Lions a 24-23 win over the Eagles on Sunday at Ford Field.

Scoring Summary

  1 2 3 4 T
Eagles 0 10 10 3 23
Lions 14 7 0 3 24

The Lions started the game with the ball and quickly worked their way up the field. With little going right for the Eagles defense, the Lions used Theo Riddick to get into the endzone, capping off an 11-play, 75-yard drive with a one-yard touchdown pass from Matthew Stafford.

The Lions were at it again on their second possession, going 80 yards on nine plays. Again, Stafford found Riddick on a screen pass for a 17-yard touchdown.

The Eagles managed to answer the call on their next drive, going 75 yards on nine plays. Wentz orchestrated a strong drive, capping it off with a one-yard touchdown pass to Mathews.

The Lions answered back quickly as the Eagles defense continued to struggle. A 12-play, 75-yard drive, aided by penalties to the Eagles, was finished off with a one-yard pass from Stafford to Marvin Jones to put the Lions back up by 14.

The Eagles again dealt with penalties on their final drive of the first half, but managed to get back into field goal range and Caleb Sturgis hit a 50-yard field goal to cut the deficit to 11 as the half ended.

The Eagles opened the second half with the ball and worked effectively to get downfield in a hurry. A nine-play, 75-yard drive took 5:42 and ended with Wentz hitting Josh Huff for a one-yard touchdown, cutting the Lions lead to four.

Stafford fumbled the ball on the Lions next possession, but the Eagles failed to take advantage of the short field and had to settle for a 33-yard field goal by Sturgis to cut the lead to one.

The Eagles started the fourth quarter by working up the field to get into field-goal range. While the drive ultimately stalled, Sturgis was able to connect again on a 49-yard field goal to give the Eagles the lead.

With the Eagles trying to run the clock off, Mathews fumbled to give the Lions the ball in good field position. It was the Eagles first turnover of the season. The Lions kicked a field goal to go back up by one with 1:29 to play.

On the first play, Wentz threw deep to Nelson Agholor and the pass was intercepted by Darius Slay, sealing a win for the Lions.
