Zach Ertz, Leodis McKelvin Remain Out Against Steelers

The Philadelphia Eagles will be without two key contributors and a promising rookie when they take on the Steelers in the lone NFL matchup of 2-0 teams on Sunday afternoon.

"Zach Ertz, Leodis McKelvin and Isaac Seumalo, those three will be out for this game," head coach Doug Pederson said. "The fact that we can get through one more ball game and get a lot of guys rested and healthy, especially with [Ertz and McKelvin], our bye week kind of hits us at a good time, for those two especially."

Pederson said that Ertz’s displaced rib is "tightening up" when he met with the media on Friday morning, but at this time it seems the risk of furthering the injury is too great to allow the pass-catching specialist to suit up this weekend.

Trey Burton filled in admirably for Ertz last Monday night versus Chicago, hauling in five passes for 49 yards and a goal line touchdown on an uncommon misdirection screen play.

"Trey, obviously an exceptional athlete," Pederson said. "[He's] part of our three tight-end package that we came out of training camp with. He’s a smart kid, love to move him around offensively, put him in some matchup situations. You’ve seen him out single receiver side, caught a big third down pass last week, and just does a nice job for us. Hopefully after the break, we get all three tight ends back and we can be full steam with those three guys."

Burton and veteran Brent Celek will both see action at tight end in the absence of the former Stanford product on Sunday. The first-year head coach commended Celek this morning for his selfless contributions in the Eagles early season success.

"I look at Brent Celek," Pederson said. "He’s playing special teams, he’s taken a bulk of the offensive reps for an older guy that is just so reliable. He’s done a nice job. Another one too that I would like to get a few more touches is 'DGB,' he’s a big tall physical kid that can run exceptionally well, and would love to get him the ball a little bit more."

Pederson said he expects Ertz, Seumalo and McKelvin to be full participants when Philadelphia returns from their bye week following the Keystone State showdown.
