The significance of the Phillies’ extra-base hitting streak

The Philadelphia Phillies might be having a hard time stringing Ws together as of late, but the method of getting on-base hasn't changed much over the course of the entire season.

The Phillies are perhaps the best team in all of baseball this season at getting on-base via the extra-base hit, whether it be a double, triple, or home run. The team has been exceptional at it, and they only continue to mash as games progress and the season enters the second half stage.

In terms of extra-base hit streaks among MLB teams, the Phillies currently hold the longest active streak at 73 games (since April 4). That streak is something the league hardly sees quite often.

The streak has shades of success from the Phillies' past where they had an extra-base hit from July 30, 2008 to June 25, 2009. That streak lasted 97 games.

When you take the extra-base streak and look at the splits at Citizens Bank Park, the Phillies have currently had an extra-base hit in 51 straight home games (starting on September 16, 2017). That's pretty darn good, and it's the longest home streak since June 23, 2010-April 17, 2011 when the Phillies had an extra-base hit in 59 straight home games.

Even when the Phillies have had their struggles scoring, they still manage to get on base one way or another via the extra-base hit. On Tuesday, the Phillies were shutout at the hands of red-hot Luis Severino and the New York Yankees, 6-0. Maikel Franco doubled in the bottom of the third inning on Tuesday night to extend the streak. It was fortunate for the Phillies, who were unable to get a run across and only managed six hits against Severino.

The way the Phils have been trending as of late, extra-base hits have been a crucial part of the team's success in building a winning baseball team. There are so many threats in the lineup to get on base that way even when the team has hit at a .235 clip, which is fifth-worst in Major League Baseball this season.

The Phillies have compiled 115 doubles, 12 triples, and 88 home runs as a team this season and there's always room for improvement. If Maikel Franco, Odubel Herrera, Rhys Hoskins, and Carlos Santana continue to get on base in the ways they have been doing recently, there shouldn't be any problem for the team to end this streak anytime soon.

Even with all the struggles the Phillies offense has faced this season, there is one thing that is very certain about this baseball team. They are a team of streaks. Whether it be winning or losing, Odubel Herrera's on-base streak to start the year, his home run streak, or the current extra-base hit streak for the team as a whole, there's no doubting the improvement the Phillies have had this season compared to each of the last six seasons.
