Looking simply at the end result, one would think losing two out of three to the worst team in Major League Baseball would mean it was a bad series. And while you would certainly rather win, there was still good news in that the Phillies bats finally came back to life this past week. Scoring 22 runs in the three game set marked a season high for the team for a single series.
Luckily, their bats came alive at the right time, as they now prepare to face the San Francisco Giants. The Giants come off a sweep of the Pittsburgh Pirates, pushing their record in the last 39 games to 30-9. Their surge has them leading the NL West by six games. The Phillies, on the other hand, are headed in the complete opposite direction. Since starting the year 24-17, they have now gone 7-26 ever since.
The pitching matchup on display will showcase a veteran vs. a rookie – Jake Peavy vs. Zach Eflin, who prepares to make his third career start in the Major Leagues. After getting shelled in his debut for eight earned runs, Eflin bounced back to go 52/3 innings while only surrendering two runs and striking out three.
